What is a Motion For Continuance?

A motion for continuance seeks the postponement of a hearing, trial or other scheduled court proceeding. Continuances may be granted for a number of reasons, such as giving a party more time to prepare a witness, to investigate matters relevant to the case, or because one party or counsel has a personal or professional conflict with a date set by the court. Continuances delay trials, however, and are disfavored amongst judges as they exacerbate the problem of clogging the court system. Continuance Motions
