What is a Certification of Class?

A motion for class certification is a motion requesting the court to certify a class so that an action can proceed as a class action. If a class is certified, the certification will usually define the class and the class claims, issues, or defenses, and must appoint class counsel. The court must direct to class members the best notice that is practicable, including individual notice to all members who can be identified through reasonable effort. Certification of Class Motions
