How To Use SmartRules

Whether you are a civil litigator, a paralegal or a legal assistant, SmartRules eliminates the need for wading through multiple sources of information and their updates.

SmartRules makes it simple to learn the requirements for your documents and tasks, significantly reducing the amount of time you spend on rule compliances, and allowing for more billable time.

Our dynamic search tool and rule navigation pages will help you find the document or task based guide you need fast.

There are two simple steps to using SmartRules:

  1.  Select the state and the jurisdiction you are working in.
  2.  Select the document or task you need (i.e.: Complaint, Answer, Service of Process, etc.).

Every guide is broken down into topics that give you all the information you need for the task at hand.

The main topics include Timing, Rules and Requirements, Format, Additional Documents and Filing Information.

Throughout SmartRules you will find citations. Clicking on the citation hyperlink will open the full text of the statute.

For ease of use, many SmartRules guides are organized into categories. Individual guides that do not fall under categories are listed alphabetically.

Categories

2100: Applications and Motions
3000: Discovery Requests and Responses
5000: Notices
6000: Responses and Oppositions
6500: Replies
7000: Requests
7500: Rule 26

SmartRules also contains a Codes & Courts section with direct links to court websites, fees, forms, local rules and codes.

The SmartRules’ Editorial Team updates the guides and Codes & Courts pages daily so you can be confident that you are working with the most up-to-date information.

Sample Case Study

An attorney seeking to respond to a Complaint in the Los Angeles Superior Court will need to know what the local rules are for each of the following topics in order to draft an Answer:

  • Deadline for filing the Answer
  • Form and Format
(including fonts, margins, page numbering, cover sheet requirements, captions)
  • Filing
(is Electronic filing available? Is it required? If so, what is the procedure?)
  • Fees

And this is only the beginning – searching through local rules to find the requirements for an Answer is a time-consuming process and a single mistake, such as missed deadline, can result in a lost case.
