What is a Cross Complaint?

A cross-complaint is a pleading filed by a defendant against the plaintiff or a third party. The defendant is then referred to as defendant/cross-complainant and the party sued is referred to as the plaintiff/cross-defendant. A cross-complaint pleads claims, or causes of action, against the plaintiff or a third party, and seeks relief in the form of a prayer for damages.
