1) What are SmartRules™?
SmartRules™ is a one-stop shop for procedural and court rules compliance. SmartRules™ capsule summaries provide a synthesis and detailed analysis of all rules and requirements from the various applicable sources relating to the most common filings in the busiest courts in New York, California, Illinois and the Federal Court System.
Moreover, SmartRules™ provides national coverage through its ‘Codes, Courts and Forms’ feature. ‘Codes, Courts and Forms’ provides quick access to federal, state and local codes, statutes, rules, court contact information, fee schedules, and other time-saving information in every trial court in the United States.
2) How do I browse SmartRules™?
The 'Browse SmartRules™' pane is designed to provide easy access to the specific SmartRule™ that you are seeking. After providing the system with information about the pleading you are working on, SmartRules™ will present you with a complete procedural guide (a "SmartRule") for drafting and filing your document.
- Selecting a Jurisdiction:
You must select a state from the 'State' list. Currently, SmartRules™ provides detailed capsule summaries relating to the most common filings in the busiest courts in New York, California, Illinois and the Federal Court System. In addition, SmartRules™ provides national coverage via the ‘Codes, Courts and Forms’ document type discussed in (b) below. You must select both a sate from the ‘State’ drop-down menu and a court from the 'Court' drop-down menu.
- Selecting a Document Type:
The 'Type' list contains general categories of pleadings. Currently, SmartRules™ provides detailed capsule summaries relating to the most common filings in the busiest courts in New York, California, Illinois and the Federal Court System. In addition, SmartRules™ provides national coverage via the ‘Codes, Courts and Forms’ document type. ‘Codes, Courts and Forms’ aggregates links to federal, state and local codes, statutes, rules, court contact information, fee schedules, and other time-saving information in every trial court in the United States.
After you have selected a 'Type,' you will be able to select from a list of relevant document 'Subtypes.' The 'Subtype' list consists of specific pleadings. The 'Subtype' list is dynamic and will change based upon your 'Type' selection. If ‘Subtype’ selections are available, the term “Select” will appear in the ‘Subtype’ box after the ‘Type’ is selected. If not, the term “None” will appear.
- Click ‘Submit’:
After selecting a 'State,' 'Court,' 'Type,' and 'Subtype' (all fields are required [unless no ‘Subtype’ selection is available]), press the ‘Submit’ button.
3) How do I search SmartRules™?
The 'Search SmartRules™' pane is designed to provide easy access to all SmartRules™ that refer to a specific rule or concept. For example, one might want to find all of the SmartRules™ that cite FRCP 6 or all of the SmartRules™ that discuss a 'meet and confer' requirement. After providing the system with information about the jurisdiction in question and entering a full text query, SmartRules™ will present you with a page listing the results of your search.
- Selecting a Jurisdiction:
You must select both a sate from the ‘State’ drop-down menu and a court from the 'Court' drop-down menu.
- Composing a Full Text Query:
Enter a full text query to identify the desired target. For example, "FRCP 6" or "meet and confer."

- Click ‘Submit’:
After selecting a 'State,' 'Court,' and entering a 'Full Text' query (all fields are required), the ‘Submit’ button.
- Select Desired SmartRules™ Capsule:
After you click the ‘Submit’ button, SmartRules™ will present you with a page listing the results of your search. Click on the title of the desired SmartRules™ capsule.
4) How do I modify SmartRules™ search criteria?
After performing a search for SmartRules™, click the 'Modify Search' button in the upper left portion of the SmartRules™ 'Search Results' page. You will be returned to the SmartRules™ main page where you can modify your search criteria.
5) How do I save SmartRules™ to disk?
From the 'View SmartRules™' page, click the 'Save to Disk' button in the 'Save Actions' pane in the upper left. A dialog box will open that asks "What do you want to do with this file?" Select the radio button next to "Save this file to disk" and click the 'OK' button. The "Save As" window will open to allow you to select the desired destination of the SmartRules™ file. Select the desired drive and directory and click the 'Save' button.
6) How do I print SmartRules™?
From the 'View SmartRules™' page, click the 'Print Document' button in the 'View Actions' pane in the upper right. The "Print" window will open to allow you modify your print options. Select the desired printer and options and click the 'Print' button.
